Socialization Follow Up

I just read an interesting article by Julie Beck titled, "Teaching the Doctrine of the Family." She says, "Many youth also have insufficient and underdeveloped social skills, which are an impediment to forming eternal families. They are increasingly adept at talking to someone 50 miles (80 km) away and less able to carry on conversations with people in the same room. That makes it difficult for them to socialize with each other."

Just an interesting note considering the recent topic.

2011Res: To Matt: I love (and have always loved) your air of confidence. To my girls: yesterday (it's only 7 AM as I type this today) I savored your laughs. Brynn, you laugh more and more--especially as we're teaching you how to jump. And Heidi, you laugh at the most mundane things but it successfully distracts an entire Gospel Doctrine class. Oh how I love to hear both of your laughs! Dear Mr H: today I made you a warm breakfast because I love you.

PS If you have important feedback about this whole home schooling thing--even if you disagree--I am ALL ears. I am still learning and researching here, too.

Just so you know, I'm intrigued to hear both sides of the homeschooling topic. We might be in an area where public school is somewhat lacking and possibly dangerous when Gideon starts school. That is the only time I have considered homeschool. And that would only be for a year or so. Other than that, I hope he goes to a public school, but reading what you have researched, it makes me want to be a bigger part of teaching him...homeschooled or not. I love to see him learn and it helps keep me mentally healthy too...even if it is elementary work. :) Thanks for the updates!

I'm not sure if you know this about me, but I am a Columbine High School student, class of 1999, who was fortunately not in the building during the shooting. After the shooting, I decided that I would home school all my kids. Since then, I have gone back and forth. Right now, my decision is to send J to public school, but that could change. I like your insight--thank you for sharing your research!

WOW Jenn, I had no idea! I, for one, and Brynn, for two, are glad you weren't at school that day!

I'm studying to be an elementary ed teacher, so I can be the different teacher that helps kiddos and isn't liberal (as some teachers are) and so that if needed I can teach my children! My autistic brother had a tough time in school, and with my son having autism, I worry!
